Tuition fee: Refund Policy for studies starting in Fall 2023
Do I have to pay a tuition fee?
Studies in higher education are free for students with a nationality of a country within the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. Citizens of the non-EU/EEA countries (excluding Switzerland) are required to pay the LUT tuition fee of EUR 13 500 for the Master's Programmes per each academic year.

I have both an EU/EEA nationality and a non-EU/EEA nationality. Which nationality I have to apply with?
You must apply with your EU/EEA (or Swiss) nationality to avoid paying the tuition fee. If being a citizen of the United Kingdom with the conditions listed at About Brexit by Finnish Immigration Service (MIGRI) you are exempted from paying the tuition fee and you must then apply with your UK nationality.
When do I have to pay the tuition fee for the first academic year?
If you wish to get the Early Bird Discount of EUR 6 000 you must pay the rest of the tuition fee EUR 7 500 within 21 days from having received the Certificate of Admission.
In Rolling Admission, this 21 days is also the time frame for you to confirm the offered place.
In Regular Admission, the final deadline - if not taking the Early Bird Discount - is 30 April 2023.
If required to apply for a Residence Permit and pay a tuition fee, your application process will be on hold until you have paid the tuition fee or, are able to show the funding for it.
How do you decide whoever gets to be exempted from paying a tuition fee?
The basic rule is that citizens of the non-EU/EEA countries (excluding Switzerland) must pay a tuition fee. Please see the exceptions at Tuition Fee.
The decision for being exempted from paying the tuition fee or not is made by LUT University at the time of applying, based on the nationality or, a status for the Finnish Residence Permit Card (if already having one) or, for the UK citizens who have arrived in Finland before 1 January 2021, based on having registered, or applied to register, their EU Right of Residence in Finland in accordance with the Withdrawal Agreement.
Where and how can I pay the tuition fee?
You can pay the tuition fee with the payment details that you will receive in your admission e-mail.
What happens if I do not pay the tuition fee?
Tuition fee unpaid for the first year:
If you have accepted your study place but don’t pay your tuition fee by the deadline defined in your admissions letter, you are not able to start your studies. Your study right will be closed. You may apply for restoring later by paying the tuition fee and a 35 EUR administrative fee. Possible discounts are not applicable in case of restoring.
Note! If applying through Rolling admission, neglecting the payment deadline will lead into losing your study right and it cannot be restored later.
Tuition fee unpaid for further studies:
The tuition fee deadline for the future study years is August 15th. If you have not
paid your tuition fee by the deadline, you will receive a reminder. If neglecting the
tuition fee payment, your study right will be closed, and you are not able to
continue your studies. You may apply for restoring later by paying the tuition fee
and a 35 EUR administrative fee.
I already have a Finnish Residence Permit Card allowing me to get exempted from paying the tuition fee. How do I secure that exemption?
You must upload a copy for your Residence Permit Card to your application at the time of applying to the programme.
I have already paid the tuition fee but got a negative decision when applying for a residence permit. Will the tuition fee be refunded?
If you have not started your studies (not received any study credits),you are entitled to a full refund of 100% of the tuition fee that you have already paid.
Note! New students must enroll for their study right by the deadline for accepting the study place. As a new student you must also enroll for courses on time even if you are not sure you have residence permit.
Registration for courses has no effect on refund.
If started your studies and received study credits either on campus or online and then quit your studies, you will lose the tuition fee for the ongoing semester (50% of the total
payment). The remaining 50% of the total payment (= tuition fee for the next
semester) can be refunded.
I was conditionally admitted and paid the tuition fee, but cannot graduateand provide LUT University with the required documents by the given DL. Will the tuition fee be refunded?
If not being able to meet with the requirements for conditionally admitted students, you will lose your right to study and will be refunded by the amount of the tuition fee you have already paid for. LUT University will however, charge you for EUR 250 for the administrative costs.
I have to cancel my place due to other reasons like accepting another study place, family issues etc.?
In case of cancelling before starting your studies, you will receive a refund for the tuition fee that you have paid. However, LUT University will charge you EUR 250 for the administrative costs.
If you have started your studies and received study credits and then quit your studies, you will lose the tuition fee for the ongoing semester (50% of the total payment). The remaining 50% of the total payment (= tuition fee for the next semester) will be refunded.
At the time of applying I had a Finnish Residence Permit Card allowing me to get exempted from paying a tuition fee but it will expire before starting my studies. Do I have to pay a tuition fee?
If you have a Finnish residence permit card allowing you to get exempted from paying the tuition fee (A other than study purposes, P, P-EU, EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland, EU Blue Card in Finland) during the application period but it expires before starting your studies, you are required to pay the tuition fee.
After renewing your permit card, you must e-mail a copy of your new Finnish
RP card to scholarships@lut.fi without any delay.
My Finnish Residence Permit Card allows me to get exempted from paying a tuition fee but it will expire during studies. Do I have to pay a tuition fee?
You are exempted from paying a tuition fee if you have one of the Finnish Residence Permits listed at Tuition Fee. When that RP card expires and cannot be renewed, you are required to pay the tuition fee starting from the beginning of next semester.
Tuition fee and graduation:
The remaining part of the paid tuition fee will be refunded starting from next semester.
If you graduate during January or August, you are allowed to graduate without
new payment. If your official graduation exceeds this deadline, you will have to
pay the tuition fee for the next semester, even if you have completed all studies
on time.
I have already paid the tuition fee and will then get a Finnish Residence Permit Card with the status that allows me to get exempted from paying the tuition fee?
You are exempted from paying a tuition fee if you have one of the Finnish Residence Permits allowing for exemption (A other than study purposes, P, P-EU, EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland, EU Blue Card in Finland).
If you deliver a copy of your Finnish Residence Permit Card that allows you to get exemption by July 31 (= before the academic year starts) the tuition fee will be refunded in full amount.
If you deliver a copy of your Finnish Residence Permit Card that allows you to get exemption within August 1-July 31 (= during the academic year), your exemption of Tuition fee will be counted to start from the beginning of the next semester.
Example: If you receive your residence permit in October, your exemption will begin 1.1. and your payment for spring semester may be refunded.
I have paid the tuition fee for the whole academic year but will graduate before the academic year is over. Will there be any refund for the tuition fee?
The remaining part of the paid tuition fee will be refunded starting from next semester.
If you graduate during January or August, you are allowed to graduate without new payment. If your official graduation exceeds this deadline, you will have to pay the tuition fee for the next semester, even if you have completed all studies on time.
FINLAND SCHOLARSHIP - FIRST ACADEMIC YEAR

My arrival is late because of residence permit application process
LUT University has scheduled time of arrival every semester, if your arrival is delayed from that scheduled time, you can’t start your studies during ongoing semester. Only program manager can give you special permit to change from this time.
If you have been granted Finland Scholarship, you will automatically lose the scholarship.
EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT - FIRST ACADEMIC YEAR
I am required to pay a tuition fee of EUR 13 500.
Is there any Early Bird Discount available?
Yes, the Early Bird Discount is EUR 6 000.
How can I get an Early Bird Discount?
If required to pay the tuition fee of EUR 13 500, you can get the Early Bird Discount of EUR 6 000 by confirming your place and paying the remaining tuition fee of EUR 7 500 within 21 days from having received the Certificate of Admission.
SCHOLARSHIP - SECOND ACADEMIC YEAR:
What are the requirements for the scholarship for the second academic year?
In a 2-year Master's Programme, when required to pay a tuition fee, you will automatically be awarded a scholarship of EUR 6 000 if having completed a minimum of 60 ECTS credits of studies included in your Personal Study Plan during the first academic year.
The required credits must be included on your Transcript of Records by the end of the first academic year i.e. by 31 July. Any previous studies possibly credited to your LUT studies will not be included in the minimum required ECTS credits.
I will not be able to graduate within two academic years as expected.
Can I still get a scholarship after two academic years?
It is not possible to get a scholarship after two academic years, so you will be charged a tuition fee since the beginning of the third academic year.
